HOUSE RESOLUTION 1109

CON-ASS BROUHAHA

Here we go again, embroiled in an issue that at best is insignificant and at worst is impracticable at the moment.

Why would some political allies of the president still want to derail the election process when everybody now is psyched up and looking forward to it?

Why insist on calling for a constituent assembly (con-ass) that will only benefit the selfish personal and political interests of the few and negate the yearnings for change of administration by majority of the citizens?

Yes, there is no denying that our constitution is flawed in some aspects, but can’t it wait until elections shall have been done and new leadership shall have been installed so that proper planning and preparation could be put together for such an important undertaking as amending the 1987 Constitution?

The rush to pass House Resolution 1109 simply shows the conceit of those members of the House who took it upon themselves to push for its approbation even after recognizing the fact that that they can never ignore the Senate in proposing constitutional amendments as an equal body.

It will served them well if, in the same manner that that the Senate has not given any credence to this resolution, the Supreme Court also would not, in any way, attach importance to the resolution.

Ramming the con-ass down the throat of the people and no less than the throats of the Senate constituency, is a perverted act of despondency over securing tightly the hold to authority and influence of the powers that be.

The House move was simply a show of dogged and blind loyalty to the administration so that they will continue being in the good graces of the president and recipients of pork barrel funds if and when, by a stroke of lightning, the decision goes in their favor.

“Con-ass” has a better and fitting interpretation in Spanish. I take to mean it more as “consuelo de asno”, meaning, “ consolation of an ass or donkey.” This can be said in the same vane as, “consuelo de bobo”, meaning, “consolation of a fool.”

This is how the mind of our distinguished proponents and supporters of House Resolution 1109 works. What a pity and a shame! These are the same sycophants and flatterers who willingly kowtow to the will of their master just to gain personal favors.

This, in effect, reminds me of the Turkish proverb that says, “A worthy man is still worthy even if penniless, a donkey is a donkey even if he is finely saddled.”
