I know we have to move on but not at the expense of the sensibilities of many Filipinos, especially those who have been victims of abominable crimes committed by politicians/government officials in the guise of public servants.
President-elect Rodrigo Duterte is known to be strong-willed, has a mind of his own and does things the way he sees fit regardless of how others perceive it, but I hope that when it comes to deciding on what to do over cases affecting the feeling and sentiments of many people, that he should step back and try to look at it from their perspective as victims.
I am talking of course about the most atrocious and contemptible of them all – the dead despot, former President Ferdinand E. Marcos, whose preserved body continues to lie in state in a mausoleum in Batac, Ilocus Norte, more now as a tourist attraction, because no Philippine leader wants to bury him at the Libingan ng mga Bayani (Heroes’ Cemetery).
And for a good reason! Only fools will consider him a hero, he who was a tyrant to his own people instead of upholding the oath he took to serve the people and be loyal to the Constitution. How could one be considered a hero if he and his family has plundered the nation’s wealth leaving the country and its people poor and miserable? How could one be a hero if he and his family were booted out of the country by people power because of their wickedness and abuses?
Burying Marcos at the Heroes’ Cemetery is one big injustice and insult to the Filipino people. Let him stay where he is. That is where he aptly belongs.
As for the living corrupt officials I am talking of course about ex-president and now Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Senators Jinggoy Estrada and Bong Revilla. If Sen. Juan Ponce Enrile can be brought back again to be in the company of Estrada and Revilla at the PNP Custodial Center so much the better.
For what they did in betraying the trust of the people, getting involved in a scandalous scam and enriching themselves instead of improving the lives of the poor and marginalized Filipinos is not only robbing them of their future but depriving them of what could be a game changer from the life of squalor they had been living all their life.
I hope Duterte also will just let the wheels of justice do its work instead of interfering and/or interceding for these rotten government officials. Let them stay where they pertinently belong.
That the Ombudsman is going after Vice President Jejomar Binay when his term of office expires is, indeed, very pleasing to the ears. This is another individual who deserves to be in a custodial center.
