In less than nine hours Filipino citizens here and abroad will be electing a president and a vice president who will try to lead the country for the next six years.
That being the case I will be writing something that is short and direct but thought provoking in the hope that it will help those undecided to finally make up their minds and cast their votes on the one that will benefit the country and its people most.
There is no doubt that there has never been an election in this country as crucial as we are having today. I can say this with all candor because I have grown old participating in the process and I am a living witness to what has been happening all these years.
What makes the 2016 election different and momentous is that it is giving the Filipino citizenry a chance or a choice to take a risk by electing one whose leadership is beyond the norm or what is considered now an out-of- the-box leadership style that would be able to move this country forward or choose one whose leadership style has been the same all these years in running government that has always fallen short making the country even fall backward.
I am talking of course about the iron hand leadership that presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte is known for and the usual passive and more civilized leadership that has been peddled to the electorate by the other presidential bets like Grace Poe, Mar Roxas and Jejomar Binay.
What I am saying is that if the more cultured approach administered by post-martial law government leaders has not allowed the country to take off, what guarantee do we have now that the same style being espoused by Poe, Roxas and Binay will succeed this time?
What the Filipino people have come to understand now, fortunately, and perhaps divinely guided is that it has always been corruption, criminality and, lately, drugs that have been preventing the country from growing and developing and its people from living a pleasant life.
What is happening now in Davao City, where Duterte as the present mayor has been hard against criminality, drug pushers and corrupt officials, and successful at that, wants to be duplicated by most Filipinos all over the country.
It is a tall order and I know Duterte won’t be able to control it in the time table he has promised, but if that is the direction he is going and will pursue it until he succeeds then we can all say that our votes have not gone in vain.
It is time that our president should have the balls and political will to go against the grain of political correctness if it means it is the best for the country and its people.
But most importantly, however, is that if Filipinos decide to have Duterte as its president for the next six years, they should inculcate in their minds also that Duterte could accomplish more for our country and its people if we collectively elect Camarines Sur Rep. Leni Robredo as his vice president. She is intelligent, competent, an action and people-person, like Duterte himself. She will very well complement Duterte’s stance.
The Duterte-Robredo ticket is the best and compelling tandem the Filipino people can offer the country.
