Duterte’s rape remark and poll standing

I was really expecting that the other presidential candidates will be ganging up on Davao Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, after the latter made that unfortunate and unwarranted remarks or joke, as he claims it was, about the rape and murder of an Australian missionary in 1989, saying, “she was beautiful, I thought, the mayor should have been first’.

After hearing Duterte every now and then before, and more often today that he is a presidential candidate, I am not surprised anymore that what he says is always tainted with foul language or what I consider a ‘corrupt’ language.

But the good thing is that spewing a foul language is the only thing that is corrupt in Duterte. Other than that he is what he is – a fearless mayor of Davao City who people see as the kind of leader that the country needs if it wants growth and development to be sustained by eliminating the hindrances to it like dishonesty in government and criminality on the streets with an iron hand.

And so, while the other presidential candidates were busy condemning Duterte’s uncalled-for remarks hoping that the tide will turn against the latter and favoring them instead, the people who are for Duterte remained steadfast with him.

Duterte’s plan for the nation seems to be the ship that many Filipinos are relying upon that will carry them to a calm and peaceful waters after having been navigated by a series of  helmsmen in turbulent waters for so long  without relief.

This is the change that the citizenry desires and hopes to happen under the command of Duterte and this is what matters most to the people now.

Besides Duterte has also no qualms in apologizing if he has hurt the sensibilities of people, if needed, as he did about the Australian rape victim controversy.

“I apologise to the Filipino people for my recent remarks in a rally. There was no intention of disrespecting our women and those who have been victims of this horrible crime.”

Duterte may be brutish and disgusting to some, but to many supporting his presidential candidacy today, he has what it takes to feel the pulse of the people and unite under a leadership that could instill discipline, order and stability which is very much needed for the country’ march to progress.

No one wonders now why is leading in poll surveys.
