For many of us who have grown old watching Philippine politics and how the country, to this day, has been corrupted by politicians since the conjugal dictatorship of Ferdinand and Imelda Marcos and how we are lagging behind in progress in the ASEAN, including Vietnam which has been severely devastated by war, we can only heave a sigh of relief if indeed the country has found a man in Davao City Mayor and presidential candidate Rodrigo Duterte who can give us the long-delayed deliverance.
Including in this deliverance is of course corruption’s allied devilry which is heinous crimes and illegal drugs.
There is no doubt that there is an urgent need for cleansing – cleansing of the kind of corrupt politicians and government officials that we have and cleansing of the society from despicable and rotten elements.
Economic deliverance that is being touted by the present administration is laudable, but if not coupled with stumping corruption and criminality in all forms and allowed instead to continue to exist with impunity then the future of this country and its people will just be as depressing as it has always been.
Indeed, Duterte’s promise to return peace and order for Filipinos to enjoy within the three to six months of his term as president if elected is a breath of fresh air.
We don’t really have to kill him if he cannot resolve heinous crimes and illegal drugs as he has urged the people to take that action against him, but if Duterte has to spill some blood in doing what he intends to achieve, then so be it, for it is proof that he is doing something that would benefit the citizenry at the end.
What Duterte seems to have that cannot be found in nor heard from the other presidential candidates is political will in making a fearless political forecast.
I still have to hear how the other presidentiables will go about solving corruption, heinous crimes and illegal drugs in the country. All are mum and perhaps afraid that if they win the presidency and the wickedness of man continues plaguing the country that they will be chewed out for it. None seems to care about it for as long as they have reached the pinnacle of their ambition. This is what matters most to them.
Fortunately, Duterte cares and resolving the ills and evils causing misery to the lives of many Filipinos matters to him.
For many of us who have grown old watching Philippine politics, maybe we still have the chance to see the country progress and the lives of Filipinos uplifted with Duterte at the helm – that is before we all conk out.
