I have not been writing for a few days frustrated about having a president who has failed to admit his own lapses that led to the Mamasapano massacre.
Even former Sen. Panfilo Lacson said that President Benigno Aquino (PNoy) should have assumed responsibility being the commander in chief and who had knowledge of the operation.
And I agree that assuming responsibility does not necessarily mean that he is totally at fault. But somehow PNoy must also be faulted for not being forthright as a person of authority, both as president and commander-in-chief.
Why I am back writing, though still frustrated, is the fact that I want to dispute PNoy’s recent pronouncement to the public that relieved Special Action Force (SAF) chief Getulio Napeñas fooled him on the events that led to the killings of the 44 police commandos.
Not only is PNoy washing completely his hands, but he is sure as hell covering also the fault of his friend and protégé, former PNP chief Alan Purisima.
In fact, nowhere in his latest pronouncement had he mentioned the participation of Purisima in the covert operation called Oplan Exodus, nay, the mention of his name, which everybody knows had more to do with the mission of neutralizing wanted international terrorists hiding in Mamasapano in Maguindanao.
If PNoy thought and believes now that Napeñas fooled him, why did Purisima, whom PNoy was in contact all the time for an update regarding the Oplan Exodus, didn’t say so.
There is just no way that, while Napeñas was preparing and honing the tactical plans of getting Marwan, he should also be the one coordinating the operational plan with the military. It was for this reason that Purisima was there – the same Purisima, who, with the knowledge of PNoy, advised Napeñas to keep the latter’s superior in the chain-of-command, OIC PNP deputy director Leonardo Espina and Interior Secretary Mar Roxas in the dark until the police commandos shall have been deployed already.
By now PNoy should understand that nobody believes him that Napeñas has fooled him. Sadly, however, the Filipinos believe that he is fooling the nation and simply fooling himself.
