There is no doubt it is high time now for Filipinos to seriously assess whether we have to pursue and sustain the direction President Benigno Aquino (PNoy) is taking this country to with selfless intentions or giving it up for the likes of Joseph Estrada and Jejomar Binay to lead us disastrously.
We have never been at this juncture before where we have earned the respect of the international community for the reforms being instituted in government that is showing positive results.
Yes, we still have a long way to go, but the way an honest and morally upright president like PNoy is doing his job is giving people hope that we can pull ourselves up from the muck of fraud and corruption we have been subjected and covered with all these years by unscrupulous politicians disguised as public servants.
It is in this light that I am taking issue against some people endorsing once more the candidacy for president of Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada.
Understandably, those endorsing Estrada and saying that the latter is still a force to reckon with in the 2016 presidential election are lackeys of the former president.
But what a perverted idea these people are floating around and what an insult it is to the Filipinos!
Yes, I praised Estrada for his handling of Manila’s affair as the city’s chief executive. But it does not mean to say that his good job of running Manila has redeemed him from his incompetence as president of the Philippines.
The Filipino people still remember Estrada’s inadequacies of running the country, his being booted out, the plunder charges against him and his conviction by the graft court that followed after, and just because all his rights have been restored after he was granted pardon by his equally corrupt successor, does not mean that it has now become a changed and upright person and fit to lead us again.
Hell no! He remains who is – incompetent as president of the republic – that is for sure.
Now, another person that covets the presidency like mad and is equally disastrous as Estrada to the country’s future is Vice President Jejomar Binay.
Lately Binay has been putting words in the Filipino people’s mouth, saying, that his explanation regarding his alleged corrupt practices when he was still the mayor of Makati City has already been accepted.
I mean, what explanation is Binay talking about when all he has done was deny all the charges he has been accused of at the Senate hearings and labeled them instead as recycled “lies”?
Just because he continues to lead today in the presidential poll surveys despite his dipping public approval and trust ratings does not mean that he is clean and deserving already of the highest position in the land.
Neither does it mean that Binay’s decision to directly address the people on September 18, 2014 made a whole lot of difference for him to say that his explanation has been accepted by the people already.
Not unless Binay attends the Senate probe and refute the corruption charges against him and prove the investigating body wrong will the people believe and accept that he is innocent. If he is lawyer and presidential candidate worth his salt then he can able defend himself.
Until then, Binay will be viewed by many Filipinos as corrupt as Estrada was during his time and, therefore, disastrous to the country’s future.
