A lot has already been said about Vice President Jejomar Binay’s corrupt practices, thanks mostly to the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee probing it.
It would not have done so much damage to Binay’s reputation/integrity if he honored the committee’s investigation to appear and refute all the corruption allegations against him.
But the fact that he brazenly ignored them all only heightened the doubts of people about his honesty, and, more importantly, his moral ascendancy to become the leader of the over 100 million Filipinos.
Having said that, one can only presume that he has really the means, financially, to walk-the-talk of his presidential ambition in establishing a well oiled political machinery that will bring him and his family to Malacañang Palace after the 2016 election.
Binay is so fixated at the presidency that for quite sometime now he has been courting boxing champion and Sarangani Rep. Manny Pacquiao for the latter’s support. A wily politician, Binay knows that using Pacquiao’s popularity is a huge factor in his bid for the presidency.
But, what seems immoral in Binay’s plan to use the popularity of Pacquiao to his advantage is the fact that he is also corrupting Pacquiao’s mind into believing that he is apt for the job as a senator of the realm, thus, wanting him to be in Binay party’s senatorial slate.
Binay claims that after proving his worth as congressman in the Lower House, Pacquiao is now “ripe” to be a member of the Upper House.
Really? What has Pacquiao done as a congressman to make him worthy of the more ponderous and demanding job as that of a senator?
Well, if we have actors and comedians crafting laws for the nation and investigating controversial issues in aid of legislation, why not add a boxer in the august halls of the senate?
I am sure that Pacquiao knows his limitations and if he had his ways he won’t pretend he is apt for the job.
But, if he the ambitious and allegedly corrupt-minded vice president and other political opportunists keep on egging Pacquiao on to run for the senate despite his incompetence, then what can he do but be forced to believe that he is qualified for the position?
A member of the Lower House, AKO Bicol party-list Rep. Rodel Batocabe, could not have said it any better, and with a warning, when he issued a statement, saying, “Pacquiao can run and might even win as senator, but the job is not suited for him. Pacquiao’s talents and achievements are more relevant to positions that will inspire and unify our people to action just like Katniss’ role in the Hunger Games-Mockingjay movie. We will be doing a great disservice to Pacquiao and the country if we put him in the Senate where the gift of gab and not jab is the main qualification.”
“Besides, electing Pacquiao to the Senate is tantamount to exiling him to perdition. As I am sure, for an action man like Pacquiao who prefers to talk less, his six-year term will be the saddest chapter of his life,” he warned.
Now, why can’t Binay, for once, think this way instead of corrupting the minds of people?
