I had been critical of Vice President Jejomar Binay and I thought my perception of him would change somehow after his much awaited/anticipated counterstatement against the senators of the Senate blue ribbon committee investigating his alleged participation in the Makati building scam delivered at the Philippine International Convention Center (PICC).
Well, not an iota has changed and the more disapproving I have become of him because he took advantage of the venue, the time and the nation-wide coverage to make it a free political campaign advertisement for his presidential agenda in 2016.
How else would you interpret it when he announced it to the Filipino people that he will do for them what he has done to his constituents when he was mayor of Makati.
When he started saying that the battle he is facing in Makati now is not only his but that of the Filipino people, it was like saying, support me in 2016 and you will be eating 3 square-meals a day and quality of life will improve.
I don’t think Binay’s rebuttal said in front of his family members, friends and supporters convinced most Filipinos of his innocence.
He has to do more than just giving his own version of the scandalous issue that is casting doubt even to the members of his family.
What more better and becoming way to do it than to face his accusers and political tormentors and refute each allegations thrown about his being corrupt in the manner that the people want to listen to – point-by-point.
One can only be more effective and convincing point-by-point if you confront the persons laying blame on you face-to-face.
For these kind of damning accusations on the Senate floor, Binay should not belittle the senators pointing at him because, surely, they have been doing their home works. Certainly, the Senate has been far from being “circus-like” during the deliberations.
Not only would I want to see Binay’s facial expressions and body language facing Senators Pimentel, Cayetano, Trillanes, or his critics, namely, Renato Bondal, Ernesto Mercado and Mario Hechanova, but most of all I want to see Binay’s reaction when he faces the cancer-stricken Nicolas “Ching” Enciso VI, who is practically giving what I call a ‘terminal testimony’.
This how the truth will set Binay free.
