Norway’s twin bloody terror attacks

Anders Behring Breivik

Norway, the country where Nobel Peace Laureates are being chosen and awarded their prestigious prizes, could never seem be in anybody’s mind that one day it could be a victim of terror attacks.

This is just to show the world that people with twisted minds, enveloped with the mantle of superiority complex, and leaning on an extremist ideology are all over the world waiting for the ripe time to unleash their violent nature.

Such is what happened to this peaceful and magnificent country, which is now struggling to come to terms with its greatest loss of lives in decades after a maniacal gunman, Anders Behring Breivik, 32, first exploded a ferocious car bomb in central Oslo, the capital, and then went on a deadly shooting rampage at a youth summer camp on the nearby island of Utoya.

Breivik has shown to be a different breed of a terrorist. His extremism and goal to destroy the very core of Norway’s political leadership brought out the brutal death of seven people in the targeted government buildings in Oslo and eighty six at Utoya, as the crazed gunman, dressed as a policeman, called the summer camp participants to come closer only to be shot at close range, while others scampered back to the lake to escape the hail of bullets.

In Oslo, police said the death toll could rise further as bodies or body parts were in buildings damaged by the bomb but still too unstable to search.

Breivik seems to have nothing but contempt towards Norway’s government as the bomb planted in Oslo was intended for the governing Labor Party, and the youth camp on Utoya island was also run by the party.

A 1,500 page document has appeared on the internet purportedly written by Breivik, describing his mindset and preparations in the 95 days before the attack and claims he has been planning the acts since 2009.

The gunman’s document reveals his dislike for what he sees as a growing influence of Muslims in Europe.

“He explained that it was cruel but that he had to go through with these acts,” defense lawyer Geir Lippestad said of his client, adding the carnage was “long planned”.

In the document posted online, references were also made to targeting “cultural Marxists/ multiculturalist traitors”.

Norway’s Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg has described how his “childhood paradise (Utoya) has been transformed into hell” after the carnage at the summer youth camp.

“Never since the Second World War has our country been hit by a crime on this scale,” he said.

He described the attacks as a “national tragedy”.
