The PNoy-Kabayan Noli brouhaha

TV Patrol news anchor Kabayan Noli de Castro and President Benigno Aquino

Much has been said about the PNoy-Kabayan Noli brouhaha, which was a result of President Benigno Aquino’s critical remarks on newscaster-turned Vice President-turned newscaster Noli de Castro, better known as Kabayan in his TV Patrol news program.

Many, until now, are still debating whether or not it was the right thing for PNoy to do when he was invited to grace the occasion of the program’s 25th anniversary celebration.

While many opine that it was not the proper forum, or that PNoy simply didn’t have the proper sense of discretion in trying to embarrass the very person at the center of TV Patrol, in his own turf at the ABS-CBN grounds, and as an official of the company, there are quite a number also that believe otherwise, saying, if not now, when?  (Perhaps Kabayan knew what was coming because he was not present when PNoy was making his disparage against him.)

But if you think about it again, the argument is really neither here nor there.

People may think that Kabayan was only exercising his freedom of expression, but since we are all enjoying that freedom, we won’t question that. However, not because we have been granted that freedom that we have the liberty to make irresponsible commentaries and unsubstantiated opinions, that are going to be heard by millions of viewers here and abroad.

It was, presumably, for this reason that PNoy brought this up, if only inculcate in the minds of ABS-CBN management, its top-notch newscasters and the rest of aspiring broadcasters in TV medium to be more circumspect and responsible in their role of bringing the news to the public wherever and whenever it happens.

There is no doubt that TV Patrol, just like 24 Oras and Aksyon TV, are relied upon by Filipinos, here and around the world, for the main source of news and information as to what goes on in the country.

There is no better elixir for anxious and longing Filipinos abroad, and even for citizens in our scattered islands, than to see and hear the actual and factual events of what is happening in and around the nation.

Needless to say that there is no room for expressing one’s theory and conjectures that does not form part and parcel of the global news, especially if it has something to do with the state of the nation. It would only elicit more confusing speculation that would not only tend to tarnish the image of our country, but would also increase the level of concern among our countrymen.

PNoy and his administration is a fair game, but when something is done that gets the attention, praise, and respect of the international communities and its agencies, then announce it as it is – no more, no less.

The problem with Kabayan Noli is that his association with former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo for 6 years has had a big impact on him and created a strong bias against PNoy and his administration that it has gotten the best of him.

Overall, it does not look too good for ABS-CBN retaining him as anchorman of the news and public affairs prime TV newscast TV Patrol.

His, is totally a bad publicity for ABS-CBN.
