What is wrong with gifting ‘Angry Birds’ toys to streetchildren?
What makes it bad, or exactly, immoral, the way the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) sees it, for President Benigno Aquino to hand out ‘Angry Birds’ toys to children who do not have families to turn to, who make their homes on the street by sleeping on junk boxes in parks and sidewalks, and who are entirely on their own for physical and psychological survival?
‘Angry Birds’ is a video game craze played by young and old where, with the use of the slingshot, multi-colored, stylized wingless birds are launched to hit and eliminate some hungry green pigs who had been stealing eggs so that the birds could repossess the eggs again.
But, more than the popularity of the game that makes it addictive for kids, it is having in their possession colorful images of the characters in the game that make kids crazy about. It makes it an obsession for them to have each and every character a collector’s item.
Kids are kids and whether one is a child on the streets, a child of the streets or a completely abandoned child, they also have a dream, a desire to, at least, own one of the ‘Angry Birds’ characters. For the unfortunate streetchildren, this is a priceless gift that will be treasured so much.
CBCP media office director Monsignor Pedro Quitorio III, in criticizing President Aquino’s benevolence, talks about the toys as “inconsistent” with the season’s message of love and peace.
The season’s message may be of love and peace, but isn’t GIVING the true spirit of the season?
Isn’t there more feeling of joy and contentment when you see people, especially children, happy and appreciative of what you give them, no matter how small or inexpensive it may be?
Isn’t GIVING not an exercise of the most unconditional love there is?
What is love without giving?
Why make much ado about the ‘Angry Birds’ gifts, then?
What is bad, immoral and inconsistent than giving gifts to deprived kids that are tainted with poison?
Isn’t CBCP concerned about this issue that is prevalent in our country today? Why are they apathetic to these type of dangerous playthings?
Just asking.

I don’t mean this to be funny…..but Chief Lapu Lapu must be rolling over in his grave.I was reading about him about a month ago.He shouldn’t have stopped after the demise of Magellan,he should have eliminated all of them.Leave it to the westerners to introduce their perverted way of establishing themselves in other lands. Christianity is one thing, but Vatican meddling and voicing it’s opinion is intolerable in my opinion.Especially these days, when you hear how they protect their pedophile priests. They’re all a bunch of old school farts who seem to be determined to bring back the Dark Ages.Too many times….the separation of church and state stands on shaky ground. All United States coins have the motto “In God We Trust” written on them. There was a time when this motto was not on them…just like the “Pledge Allegiance To The Flag” which we recited every morning in school….at one time had no mention of god,but it does now.On top of that….religious institutions are exempt from paying taxes.I view the Vatican the same way I view China,Bahhh!
I’ll end this with a quote that I found on another website.
” Not many years after the first Catholic missionaries appeared, Japanese civil rulers began to realize that the Catholic Church was not only a religion, but a political power intimately connected with the imperialistic expansion of Catholic countries like Portugal, Spain, and other Western nations.”
I could not agree with you more. Ever since I distanced myself from the church my intuition, my discernment, has been acutely developed and I feel better. I could not stand hypocrisy of the church. We are being had by these religious bigots who have taken vows of chastity, poverty and obedience only to violate them with impunity. What makes it worst in this country is that politicians kowtow to their whims and caprices in return for religious favors and considerations. It simply makes one puke.
maybe CBCP is holding grudges because Pnoy is rooting for Reproductive Health Bill.. I don’t trust CBCP…
Bingo!
Yep…sounds like the politics game is alive and well.I wish religion would stay out of politics and vice versa. While reading this post,it also came to mind that the Taliban in Afghanistan had outlawed kite flying.
I call it misplaced fanaticism.
